|Helen Ross, Georgia FSC - Coach
Helen has been the Co-Chair of the Peach Classic competition the last 3 years and coaches several of the members of the Geriatric Figure Skating Crew.
She passed the gold tests in figures and free style. She represented the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society and was coached by Don Laws (for 8 years). She also trained with Richard Callaghan and Petra Burka (1965 Ladies World Champion).
She was the South Atlantic Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice and Junior Ladies champion and came in 3rd in Senior Ladies.
Skating Pairs with Pat Lalor, they were the South Atlantic Junior Pairs champion, and came in 2nd at Eastern Sectionals. Their names are on a trophy that is currently at the USFSA Hall of Fame museum.
At different times, she competed against Taffy Pergament Holiday (prominent world judge) and Vera Wang, now a famous dress designer. Vera also produces most of Michelle Kwan's skating dresses.
She graduated from St. Lawrence University, in Canton, NY with a B.A. in German, after having spending her junior year abroad in Vienna, Austria.
She started coaching in 1976 at the Igloo on Roswell Rd (now a furniture store) and was Shepard Clark's (top US contender for years) and Archie and Ginger Tse's (members of the US world team in pairs) first coach.
Over the years, she has taught students who competed at not only the regional level, but sectional, National, Junior National and Professional levels.
Besides coaching, she has been a Skating School Director (Atlanta), Director of Figure Skating (Jacksonville) and Head Pro (Orlando - where they didn't have a director).
She served as a supply/rink coordinator for 1992 Nationals in Orlando and 1993 Skate America in Atlanta. Besides the Peach Classic, she has chaired 2 ISI Winter classics and co-chaired several ice shows.
She was married for almost 30 years and has 3 children. Her husband passed away in 2003.
